Severe wind and rainstorms hit the upper North Island, resulting in more than 100 reports of damage.
Snow and Strong Winds Impact South Island and North Island
Snowfall warnings are in effect for the South Island's Crown Range Rd and Milford Rd (SH94) until midday and 2pm respectively, according to MetService. Periods of snow are expected to fall on Milford Rd, with approximately 1cm of snow anticipated to settle on the Crown Range Rd on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, strong winds are also forecast for parts of the lower South Island on Monday. West to southwest winds could become more powerful in exposed areas, with several southwesterly gales forecast to gust up to 120km/h. A strong wind watch is in place from 12pm on Monday until 12am in Hawke's Bay south of Hastings, and the Tararua District. There is a moderate chance this watch could be upgraded to a weather warning.
In the North Island, the wild weather downed trees and powerlines throughout Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty over the weekend. Fire and Emergency shift manager Josh Pennefather reported 114 call-outs in Auckland, 29 in Waikato, three in Northland, and nine in Bay of Plenty due to the strong winds.
A tree fell onto a house in Onehunga, Auckland, and a trampoline flew onto a neighbour's roof in Papakura, Auckland. Despite these incidents, no injuries have been reported due to the strong winds in the North Island.
According to the Vector website, power was still out in small patches across Auckland due to the strong winds. The Auckland Harbour Bridge, along with Auckland, Great Barrier Island, and the Coromandel Peninsula, were under an orange strong wind warning for Sunday afternoon. Lane closures and speed reductions could be triggered during wind gusts of 75-80km/h on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
A weather watch is also in place for Dunedin, Clutha, Southland south of Gore, and Stewart Island from 12pm through to 6pm. MetService has indicated a high chance that the strong wind watch for the Auckland Harbour Bridge will be upgraded to a weather warning, but no specific information is provided about who issued this warning or its validity period.
