Shark attack on Sydney beach leads to surfer's death
In a shocking incident, a 57-year-old man identified as Mercury Psillakis lost his life following a shark attack at Long Reef Beach, Sydney, on a Saturday morning.
The attack occurred just after 10 a.m. local time (8 p.m. ET Friday), approximately 328 feet from the shore. Mr. Psillakis, an experienced surfer, was surfing with friends at the time of the attack.
The species of the shark responsible for the attack remains unknown. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and lifeguards on jetskis are now monitoring beaches for any signs of the predator.
This is the first shark attack fatality in Sydney since February 2022. It's a sad reminder that despite the rare occurrence, such incidents can happen.
The Northern Beaches Council issued a statement regarding the shark monitoring measures being put in place. Several other beaches were closed as a precautionary measure following the incident.
Tragically, Mr. Psillakis did not survive his injuries. He leaves behind his wife and a young daughter. Police have retrieved two sections of the surfer's surfboard for examination.
It's important to note that there have been three other fatal shark attacks in Australia in 2025. In March, a surfer was killed by a shark in shallow water on a remote beach in Western Australia.
The state-run operator of Sydney's Taronga Zoo provided data on shark attacks in Australia. According to their records, the last shark attack fatality in Sydney occurred in 1963.
The community is urged to stay vigilant and follow beach safety guidelines. Lifeguards and authorities will continue their efforts to ensure the safety of beachgoers. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
