In an era where technology is constantly evolving, Canon, a renowned name in the world of photography, is making strides in its lens offerings for mirrorless cameras. This transition, first announced in 2020, is reshaping the landscape of Canon's lens collection.

Hillary K. Grigonis, a seasoned photographer with over a decade of experience and a knack for journalistic style, dives deep into this transformation for Digital Camera World. Grigonis, who has worked with a variety of brands including Nikon, Canon, and Fujifilm, brings a unique perspective to this analysis.

Currently, Canon offers over 60 RF-mount mirrorless lenses directly under its brand for its mirrorless camera systems. This is a significant leap from the 27 available lenses between the full-frame and crop sensor DSLR mounts listed on Canon's UK website. It's worth noting that while mirrorless lenses can work with DSLRs with an adapter, the opposite isn't true - mirrorless lenses can't be adapted to a Canon DSLR.

One of the advantages of Canon's mirrorless lenses is their compactness. For instance, the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM mirrorless lens is smaller and lighter than its DSLR counterpart, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8. This is a trend that continues across many of Canon's mirrorless offerings, such as the RF 28-70mm f/2.8 lens, a prime example of a mirrorless lens that doesn't have a DSLR equivalent.

Despite this shift, Canon still has more than a dozen different lenses in stock for DSLRs, and the number of new-in-box lenses that Canon has available for DSLRs is dwindling. This could potentially lead to an increase in the cost of used DSLR lenses as they become scarcer.

Grigonis's work, favouring a journalistic style in her wedding and portrait photography, has appeared in various prestigious publications such as Business Insider, Digital Trends, Pocket-lint, Rangefinder, The Phoblographer, and more. As a licensed drone pilot, she brings a unique angle to her photography, and her extensive experience with a wide range of cameras and lenses across multiple brands adds depth to her insights.

Canon's lens hall of fame includes 160 different lenses and extenders for the EF system, a testament to the brand's rich history in lens manufacturing. The first Canon EF lens dates back to 1987, marking the beginning of a journey that continues to evolve today.

As Canon moves forward, it's clear that the future lies in mirrorless technology. However, for those still invested in DSLRs, the brand continues to provide a selection of lenses to cater to their needs. This transition, while significant, is a testament to Canon's commitment to innovation and its dedication to meeting the ever-changing demands of the photography industry.
