Shiv Sena (UBT) Embraces Rahakrishan's Candidate Status; Fadnavis Requests Cross-Party Collaboration
Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan's nomination as the NDA's candidate for the post of Vice President has sparked a mixed response.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has welcomed the nomination, with MP Sanjay Raut expressing happiness over the development. Raut compared Radhakrishnan's nomination to that of Shankar Dayal Sharma, who had ties to Maharashtra and served as Vice President and later President.
However, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena (UBT), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Indian National Congress, has shown signs of unease. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has not yet confirmed its support for Radhakrishnan's candidacy, stating that a decision will be made collectively within the alliance. The NCP president, Sharad Pawar, has not yet issued a statement on the matter, and it is believed that the party may still be deliberating its position or awaiting further political developments.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar has expressed hope that Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena (UBT) president, will not support the NDA nominee for the post of Vice President, Mr. Radhakrishnan.
The nomination comes at a time when the NDA currently enjoys the backing of at least 422 out of 781 members in the electoral college, suggesting a potential victory for Radhakrishnan. The electoral college for the Vice President's election includes all members of both Houses of Parliament.
In other news, heavy rains in Maharashtra have caused damage to over 5.4 Lakh hectares of crops, leading to the deaths of eight people. The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has appealed to all MPs from the state to support Radhakrishnan's candidature for the post of Vice President.
Radhakrishnan, a native of Tamil Nadu, is a registered voter in Mumbai and cast his vote during last year's assembly elections. After his nomination, he left for New Delhi to hold discussions with senior BJP leaders.
The situation within the MVA alliance and the support for Radhakrishnan's candidacy remains to be seen as the election for the Vice President approaches.
