Shrinking projected revenues for Cyber and Intelligence divisions at BAE Systems foreseen
BAE Systems Anticipates Growth in Cyber and Intelligence Division
BAE Systems, a leading global defence, aerospace, and security company, has announced its expectations for growth in the cyber and intelligence division, particularly in UK and overseas government markets, as well as in commercial markets for managing cyber threats, countering financial fraud, and improving compliance.
The company's strategy includes pursuing organic growth opportunities in commercial cyber and security applications and systems. In 2012, the Cyber and Intelligence division grew by 16% to £1.4 billion, accounting for 7.8% of the company's total sales, according to the annual report.
However, the company expects a reduction in sales from its Cyber and Intelligence division in 2013. This anticipated decline is due to factors such as efforts to reduce the US government's budget deficit, which are likely to impact all areas of government spend, and delays in procurement awards in the US market.
BAE Systems' UK security unit, Detica, plays a significant role in the Cyber and Intelligence division. The Detica UK Security Operations Centre became fully operational in 2012, providing services to detect and remediate advanced cyber attacks for clients.
The company has also secured a five-year contract with Vodafone, which serves as evidence of its penetration into the private sector market. BAE Systems is currently working on providing secure IT equipment and a desktop virtualisation environment for the US Defense Intelligence Agency.
One of the large IT programs the company is currently working on is the NERVE program (National System for Geospatial-Intelligence Enterprise Repository and Virtual Environment) for the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), aimed at modernizing the NSG Consolidated Library by migrating to a cloud-based data architecture.
Despite the expected decline in 2013, BAE Systems maintains a strategic focus on growing its positions in the cyber and intelligence services markets. The company's efforts to expand in these areas are evident in its continued work on large military and government information systems, as well as its foray into the private sector market.
