Significant shifts occurring globally bolster the argument for a more profound India-Germany alliance: Jaishankar

Significant shifts occurring globally bolster the argument for intensifying India-Germany ties, asserts Jaishankar.

In a significant development, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently held productive discussions with his German counterpart, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, in New Delhi. The talks focused on India-Germany cooperation and India's relationship with the European Union.

Jaishankar emphasised the enormously important relationship between India and Germany, stating that it is growing in substance and holds greater value "at this time of uncertainties." He cited significant and far-reaching changes on the global strategic landscape, as well as volatility on the global economic landscape, as factors that make a strong case for India and Germany to work more closely together.

The discussions also covered regional, global, and multilateral issues, including the Ukraine conflict, West Asia, Middle East, and Indo-Pacific. On the matter of terrorism, Jaishankar highlighted Germany's understanding and support for India's fight against terrorism. German Foreign Minister Wadephul explicitly supported India's right to defend against terrorist attacks.

The bilateral trade between India and Germany was nearly 50 billion euros last year, and the German Foreign Minister expressed confidence that it would be doubled. Jaishankar also emphasised the importance of intensifying scientific collaboration between India and Germany, linking it to industry. He highlighted the potential of cyber and digital dialogues, and space cooperation.

There has been an uptick in India's defense and security cooperation with Germany. Last year, Germany participated in the Tarang Shakti air exercises, and its ships made port calls to Goa. However, there is no public record of German Foreign Minister Wadephul contributing to the Indian air exercises.

A parliamentary delegation from Germany, which visited India after Operation Sindoor, was warmly received. Jaishankar also raised the issue of Ariha Shah, an Indian child who has been in the foster care of German authorities for some time. He emphasised the importance of ensuring the cultural rights and Indian surroundings for Ariha Shah.

Jaishankar also expressed India's commitment to continuously improving the ease of doing business in the country and would give special attention to any concerns German companies may have. This is the first visit of Johann Wadephul to India as German Foreign Minister.

The productive discussions between the two ministers mark a significant step forward in India-Germany relations and India's relationship with the European Union. The shared understanding and mutual support on various global and regional issues will undoubtedly strengthen the bonds between the two nations.
