In the city of Mönchengladbach, a unique project named QiK is currently underway, making it the only municipality where the program is in operation. This initiative, supported by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Flight and Integration (MKJFGFI) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, aims to attract new specialists to secure the quality and stability of early childhood education.

The project, which spans a duration of three years, seeks to facilitate career changes into childcare. Last year, QiK was successfully implemented in Mönchengladbach for the first time with 17 participants, all of whom had previously worked for the city in various functions, such as everyday helpers. The experiences were consistently positive, as stated by Klaus Röttgen, head of the youth office of the city of Mönchengladbach.

The first two years of the project involve participants working in daycare facilities to gain practical experience. During this period, a weekly theory block is included, provided by a continuing education provider. In the third year, participants enter the final year of training to become a children's nurse, culminating in a qualification as a state-recognized children's nurse.

Klaus Röttgen values the project due to the participants' diverse professional and personal backgrounds. He considers work in childcare one of the most beautiful but challenging tasks, emphasising the importance of people who listen to children, accompany them, and support them.

The Mönchengladbach AWO contributes its experiences to the implementation of QiK in the Rheinisch-Bergische district, with plans for the project to be rolled out there in the near future. The city of Mönchengladbach, along with other daycare providers, the employment agency, and the AWO Mönchengladbach, coordinate QiK locally.

As a model community initiative, QiK is part of a broader effort to address the challenges faced in the childcare sector. The project's success in Mönchengladbach serves as a beacon for other municipalities, demonstrating the potential for similar initiatives to make a positive impact on early childhood education and care.
