Smoke Warning Declared for June 13, 2025 in VdF-NRW; Proprietor Remains Unreported Despite Smoke Obligation
In a bid to emphasize the importance of smoke alarms in saving lives and minimizing the consequences of a fire, the Association of Fire Departments in NRW e.V. and Provinzial Insurance are urging homeowners to check their living spaces and retrofit them with certified smoke alarms if necessary. This call to action is part of Smoke Alarm Day, an annual event traditionally held on a Friday the 13th.
Smoke Alarm Day, organized by the Association of Fire Departments in NRW e.V., aims to highlight existing gaps in the implementation of legal requirements regarding smoke alarms. In the 16 federal states of Germany, there is a legal obligation to install smoke alarms in all residential properties. However, a recent study suggests that around a quarter of owners of self-occupied residential properties have not equipped their apartments with sufficient smoke alarms.
Christoph Dohr, head of the damage prevention and risk assessment department at Provinzial Insurance, emphasizes that installing and maintaining smoke alarms is a crucial contribution to safety. He views smoke alarms as a sign of responsibility towards oneself, family, and community. Smoke alarms are the most effective measure to warn people in their sleep in case of a fire, detecting dangerous smoke early and giving residents valuable seconds to escape.
Smoke alarms should be placed in bedrooms, children's rooms, and corridors that serve as escape routes. Regular maintenance and replacement of smoke alarms every ten years is crucial to ensure their effectiveness. A timely warning from smoke alarms can save lives in an emergency and minimize the consequences of a fire.
Just three breaths of smoke can be fatal, especially at night when the sense of smell is inactive. In a residential fire, the toxic smoke is the biggest danger, not the fire itself. The person highlighted as fire safety education and awareness representative at VdF NRW, Birgit Kill, explains that many owners believe they are not directly affected by the legal obligation or underestimate the risk.
