Milt Stegall, the father of DePaul University soccer player Chase Stegall, expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt post on X on June 7, 2025. The post followed the sudden and tragic death of his son, who passed away on June 2, 2025, from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).

Chase Stegall, a sophomore at DePaul, was a well-loved member of the university community. He was known for his warmth, strength of character, and vibrant presence, according to DePaul president Rob Manuel. Mark Plotkin, the head coach for men's soccer at DePaul, remembered Chase as a 'dedicated teammate and kind-hearted friend.'

Chase's death sent shockwaves through the university community and the wider sports world. During his sophomore season in 2024, he played in 16 of DePaul's 17 matches and scored a goal against Drake in September.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is rare but a significant risk for people living with epilepsy. SUDEP often occurs during or after seizures with no other cause of death found. In the case of Chase Stegall, no other cause of death was found.

The manner of Chase Stegall's death was classified as 'natural' by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Milt Stegall, a former NFL and Canadian Football League wide receiver, has passed away since his son's death.

Chase Stegall is survived by his mother, Darlene, and his brother Collin. Milt Stegall stated that every message, call, post, and tribute made him and his family feel supported during a difficult time. The soccer community and the wider sports world continue to mourn the loss of this promising young athlete.
