Social Democrat contender taking the lead in polls for the Bucharest mayoral race
The upcoming mayoral elections in Bucharest are shaping up to be a closely contested race, with several candidates vying for the top position. According to recent polls, the Social Democrat (PSD) mayor of District 4 in Bucharest, Daniel Baluta, currently leads the pack, but the race remains tight.
In a poll conducted by CURS, Baluta is expected to receive 24% of the votes, followed by Catalin Drula from USR, who is predicted to get 20%. The Liberals' candidate, Ciprian Ciucu, is expected to garner 11% of the votes, while Cristian Popescu Piedone (PUSL) is anticipated to receive the same percentage. Interestingly, both Ciucu and Popescu Piedone are seen as receiving nearly equal support, with Ciucu expected to get nearly 24% of the votes under both scenarios.
The polls also predict that the far-right party AUR could potentially make a significant impact in the elections. Anca Alexandrescu, a supporter of far-right nationalist presidential candidate Calin Georgescu, is expected to receive 9% of the votes in the next preference among voters in Bucharest. Potential candidates proposed by AUR could receive 21%-22% of the votes, with AUR president George Simion receiving slightly more at 22%. The party is expected to receive 18% of the votes for the General Council of Bucharest Municipality, according to the poll.
Mihai Enache (AUR) is expected to receive 6% of the votes, while Vlad Gheorghe (DREPT) is anticipated to get 3% and Diana Sşosşoaca (SOS Romania) is expected to receive 5% of the votes, according to the CURS poll.
If local elections were held next Sunday, USR would obtain 24% of the votes for the General Council of Bucharest Municipality, followed by PSD with 21%. Under the CURS poll, Catalin Drula would get 18.4%-16.9% of the votes, while under the INSCOP poll, he is expected to get 16.9% of the votes.
Interestingly, the SENS candidate, Ana Ciceala, is seen as receiving 8.5% of the votes in both scenarios, indicating a consistent level of support for her candidacy.
The race could take an interesting turn if centre-right parties nominate a single candidate. According to the INSCOP poll for the Liberal Party, the name of the sole candidate announced by an alliance of centre-right parties who could potentially overturn the elections is Ludovic Orban.
No specific date for the mayoral elections in Bucharest has been scheduled yet. As the race heats up, it remains to be seen who will emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
