- Socialist Principles under the GDR's Governance and the Political Left Movement
In the latest issue of stern, Heidi Reichinnek, the left faction leader, made a statement about the German Democratic Republic (GDR) that has stirred up quite a controversy. Reichinnek stated that what existed in the GDR was not socialism as her party envisions.
This statement was met with criticism for not describing what the GDR actually was. Hajo Schumacher, a respected colleague, noted that he wished for a follow-up question about Reichinnek's meaning. Christian Niemietz, the author of "Socialism. The Failed Idea That Never Dies," has developed an interest in discussing Reichinnek's views on the socialist ideology in the GDR.
During a recent market visit to Erfurt's Domplatz, the author had a conversation with a market stall seller. The seller, born in 1965 and living in the DDR for 25 years, was wearing a deep blue T-shirt with the DDR's coat of arms. The T-shirt represented the DDR football team that beat West Germany in 1974.
When asked about Reichinnek's statement, the seller shared that living in the DDR was not all good, but not all bad. However, the seller and Reichinnek probably share the same sentiment about the GDR. Reichinnek, born in 1988 into the ailing GDR, likely learned from her parents, who were not in the SED but in the church, that the GDR didn't work.
Reichinnek's statement has sparked reactions from various political figures. Markus Söder, for example, described the GDR as "pure socialism" and a state of lawlessness. In his column for stern, Martin Debes, who primarily reports from the five eastern federal states, wrote about what's happening in the Middle East and himself, touching upon the ongoing debate about the GDR.
The column format allows for personal and free-form writing, not bound by a specific structure. This format seems to have facilitated Reichinnek's open expression of her views, leading to the current debate. As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen how this will shape the political landscape in Germany.
