In the picturesque town of Radebeul, Germany, Dietrich Bauer, the chairman of Diakonie Sachsen, has voiced his concerns about the current state of societal debate.
Bauer, a 65-year-old senior church councilor, lamented the increasing use of verbal attacks on politicians in social media, a trend he finds troubling. He believes that simple and quick solutions to complex problems are impossible, and insisting on such solutions creates false expectations.
Bauer, who also lives in Radebeul, expressed concern about politics in some parties taking an exaggerated form of staging. He stated that there is a certain ruthlessness in society, and in a democratic society, many must negotiate the processes.
The chairman of Diakonie, a well-known social welfare organisation in Germany, believes that belonging to a lively communication includes being allowed to be wrong once. He stated that Diakonie sees it as their task to participate in debates and contribute to their rationalization.
Bauer admires those who take responsibility in politics, but he noted that if a politician makes an inaccuracy or a mistake, it is scrutinized 100 percent. He also pointed out that verbal attacks on politicians are harshly punished for formulaic statements.
Bauer further stated that short-term success in politics is not achievable due to complex and long-term processes. He believes that societal questions concern everyone, and it is important for everyone to engage in open and honest discussions.
The German Press Agency reported that Bauer has expressed concern about the coarsening of societal debate, and he called for a return to more respectful and thoughtful discussions. He emphasised the importance of taking responsibility, engaging in open dialogue, and allowing for the possibility of error in the pursuit of finding solutions to complex societal issues.
