Solar Pumpkin from the Sun Revealed by NASA on Halloween
In a fascinating turn of events, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) captured an image of the Sun that resembled a jack-o-lantern on Halloween 2014. The image, shared by NASA on social media platforms, has since gathered over 9 lakh likes on Instagram.
The SDO, which has been maintaining an unblinking eye on the Sun since 2010, recorded this unusual phenomenon. The image was captured in ultraviolet light, revealing dark patches on the Sun known as coronal holes. These areas are where rapid solar wind gushes out into space.
The image combines two collections of severe ultraviolet wavelengths at 171 and 193 Angstroms, typically colourized in gold and yellow. The dark patches on the Sun, against its fiery features, construct a face-like pattern that gives the Sun a noticeable macabre grin, resembling a jack-o-lantern.
The American space firm wrote the subtitle of the post, "Say cheese! Today, NASA's Solar Characteristics Observatory caught the Sun 'grinning.'" The image has garnered significant attention, with users left astonished by the cosmic spectacle, while others pointed out that it creates a Halloween-like look.
One user commented, "The universe is gorgeous," while another said, "That's so stunning therefore cool at the same time." Some users even joked about the image, with one user posting, "prohibited jack o lantern."
The SDO measures the Sun's inside, atmosphere, electromagnetic field, and energy output, helping us understand our local star. The active areas in the image appear brighter because they send out more light and power, markers of an intense and intricate set of electromagnetic fields floating in the sun's environment, the corona.
The image was first published by NDTV on 1 November 2022, and the authorship can be verified through NASA's official websites and image archives. The photo of the Sun's face taken on October 31, 2014, by the Solar Dynamics Observatory continues to intrigue and delight us, reminding us of the awe-inspiring beauty of our universe.
