Sonako of Senegal scraps initial scheduled voyage to France in September
In a surprising turn of events, Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has announced his cancellation from the 11th edition of Bpifrance Inno Génération (BIG) in Paris, scheduled for 23 September. The cancellation comes amidst a busy schedule for the Prime Minister, who has also announced official trips to the United Arab Emirates and Italy.
The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to BPI France for the invitation in a statement published on social media and his website on 3 September. He pledged to work around the clock to ensure his commitments are met.
Sonko's decision to cancel the BPI France event may be a reflection of his scheduling constraints, as he is also expected to welcome his French counterpart to Dakar as part of the Intergovernmental Seminar (SIG) between Senegal and France. The dates for the SIG have not been confirmed yet.
It's worth noting that the Intergovernmental Seminar is a joint initiative announced by both Senegal and France. Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace, where they agreed on the need to "renew" and "strengthen" the relationship between the two nations. Faye's visit to Paris was not mentioned in the earlier bullet points.
In a recent public address, Faye highlighted Senegal's expanding market, recognized political stability, and opportunities in strategic sectors with high potential. He took part in key business meetings, the Rencontres des Entrepreneurs de France (REF), where he sought to convince French business leaders to reinvest in his country.
Interestingly, a Senegalese political analyst suggested that Sonko's sovereignist discourse and strong positions on France in recent years could be a factor in his decision to cancel the BPI France event.
In light of the Prime Minister's busy schedule, it remains unclear what scheduling problem has led to his cancellation of the BPI France event. It's also worth noting that according to protocol, the head of state and the prime minister cannot be outside Senegal at the same time.
As for who will represent France at the Intergovernmental Seminar in September in Dakar, no specific information is available. However, high-ranking officials such as ministers or ambassadors are likely to be part of the delegation.
Sonko's cabinet is also undergoing a reshuffle, adding another layer of complexity to the political landscape in Senegal. The Prime Minister's official trips to the United Arab Emirates and Italy to meet with the Senegalese diaspora are likely to provide insights into his plans for the future.
