South Africa Announces Squad for 2025 Women's World Cup

South Africa has unveiled its squad for the highly anticipated 2025 Women's World Cup, with a mix of experienced players and fresh talent. The team, led by captain Laura Wolvaardt, includes several cricketers who are yet to play an ODI World Cup match, such as Anneke Bosch, Nadine de Klerk, Nondumiso Shangase, and Annerie Dercksen.

One of the notable absentees from the squad is former captain Dane van Niekerk, who announced her intention to revoke her retirement on August 25, 2025. Mandla Mashimbyi, the South African coach, stated on August 28 that van Niekerk was "definitely not part" of their World Cup plans. However, it is worth noting that van Niekerk was included in the pre-World Cup training camp earlier in August.

The coach did not explicitly name the person responsible for the decision to exclude van Niekerk from the squad. Van Niekerk herself will be considered for selection only once she "ticks all the boxes".

The young wicketkeeper Karabo Meso, who will turn 18 just ahead of the tournament, has been included in the squad. Meso has played two ODIs and five T20Is so far and was part of the South African team in the U19 T20 World Cups in 2023 and 2025.

The team's first match is against England on October 3 in Guwahati, followed by matches against India, Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and several other teams. The squad also includes Miane Smit as the traveling reserve.

The 2025 Women's World Cup promises to be an exciting tournament, and South Africa's squad is eager to make their mark. With a mix of youth and experience, the team is ready to take on the world's best.
