South Korean carmaker boosts electric vehicle offerings with a fleet of new Kia models unveiled
Kia has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the unveiling of several new models at its '2025 Kia EV Day' event held in Tarragona, Spain. The South Korean automaker showcased a range of innovative electric vehicles, including the Kia EV4, the PV5, and the Concept EV2.
Kia EV4: A Premium Mass Market C-Segment Car
The Kia EV4, a premium mass market C-segment car, is designed to cater to both European and Asian markets. It comes in both five-door hatchback and four-door saloon versions. The EV4 boasts an impressively slippery 0.23Cd drag coefficient, ensuring excellent aerodynamics and efficiency.
The EV4 offers an optional Harmon/Kardon speaker system for cinema-quality sound, making it a delight for music enthusiasts. It also supports streaming services like Netflix, providing entertainment on the go.
One of the standout features of the EV4 is its charging system. With a 400V charge system, the vehicle can get from 10% to 80% charged in just over half an hour. Moreover, the EV4 supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to supply power to external devices, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) mode, which enables it to act as a backup battery.
Kia PV5: A Versatile Electric Vehicle
The PV5 van made its debut in production form, featuring a range of models including cargo, crew, wheelchair access, and consumer versions. The PV5 Passenger, a variant of the PV5, can be seen as a direct competitor to VW's ID.Buzz.
The PV5 and its variants are built on Kia's Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service, ensuring robustness and versatility. They are also part of Kia's Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy, aiming to scale up and down for various forms of personal mobility.
Collaborations for Enhanced In-Car Services
Kia is teaming up with Samsung for in-car services for the PBV range. The collaboration aims to provide seamless connectivity and advanced in-car experiences for Kia's electric vehicles.
The Future of Kia's Electric Lineup
Kia hinted at the development of a city-friendly EV1, with EV7 and EV8 reserved for crossover and sporting variants. The designer of the Kia Concept EV2 and the Kia EV4 follows Kia's "Opposites United" design philosophy, combining technology and nature, practicality and emotion, to create innovative electric vehicles like the Concept EV2 and EV4.
The Concept EV2 is a lightly disguised version of a small B-Segment SUV that will soon enter production. The line-up of electric vehicles now includes the Concept EV2, Kia EV4 (in both saloon and hatchback versions), Kia EV3, EV6, and EV9.
The AddGear system, previewed by the PV5 WKNDR and EV9 ADVNTR concepts, will be available on the EV4 for custom accessories. This system allows for the personalization of the EV4, making it a truly unique vehicle for each owner.
With these new electric vehicles, Kia is positioning itself as a leader in the electric vehicle market, offering a wide range of innovative and versatile electric vehicles to suit fleet buyers, families, taxi cabs, and car shares.
