SpaceX Secures FAA Authorization to Double Falcon 9 Launches from Florida Spaceport
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted SpaceX regulatory approval to expand its launch operations out of Florida, enabling the company to more than double its annual Falcon 9 launch capacity from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
As part of the approval, SpaceX is authorised to construct a new on-site landing zone for up to 34 booster landings annually. This dedicated landing zone is expected to streamline turnaround times by reducing reliance on drone ship recoveries at sea.
The FAA's decision follows a thorough review of the proposed expansion, which assessed concerns around industrial wastewater created by the launch pad's deluge system and potential impacts on Florida's coastal ecosystem. To mitigate these concerns, SpaceX must take additional measures such as acquiring extra environmental permits, using lighting that will not disturb nesting sea turtles, and conducting surveys to safeguard species like the Florida scrub-jay and eastern indigo snake.
Regulators concluded that the risk of this water discharging into nearby bodies is minimal. Moreover, the FAA issued a "Mitigated Finding of No Significant Impact," indicating that the proposed activities would not cause major harm to the environment.
The expansion will help manage SpaceX's packed launch schedule, including commercial satellite operators, U.S. defense missions, and SpaceX's own Starlink satellites. With the new capacity, SpaceX can conduct up to 120 Falcon 9 missions per year.
However, the U.S. Department of the Air Force must also sign off on the expansion since Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is under military jurisdiction. The approval for SpaceX to fully implement the expanded launch operations program in Florida must be granted by the U.S. Department of the Air Force, specifically through the Eastern Range, which supports all rocket launches from the Space Coast.
