Spanish Prime Minister, Sanchez, unveils nine actions to combat "the genocide in Gaza," aiming to place Spain on the correct side of historical records.
Spain Announces Nine Measures to Support Palestine and Combat Genocide in Gaza
The Spanish Government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, announced a series of nine measures on Monday to stop the genocide in Gaza and increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The measures include an arms embargo on Israel by law and banning entry into Spain for those who participate in the genocide. Access to Spanish territory will also be prohibited for all those who participate directly in the genocide, the violation of human rights, and war crimes in Gaza.
In a bid to combat the occupations in Gaza and the West Bank, the import of products from the illegal settlements will not be permitted. The Spanish Government aims to stop the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians and keep the two-state solution alive.
To strengthen support for the Palestinian Authority, the number of Spanish personnel in the European Union’s Rafah Border Assistance Mission will be increased, and new collaboration projects with the Palestinian Authority will be established in the fields of agriculture, food security, and medical assistance.
In addition to these measures, the Spanish Government has committed to fighting anti-Semitism and racism. To demonstrate this commitment, the Government has granted nationality to 72,000 Sephardic Jews and approved the first National Plan against Anti-Semitism in January 2023, adopting the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism.
The Government has also increased its contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) by an additional 10 million euros for the aid of the Gazan population. By 2026, the humanitarian aid and cooperation fund for Gaza will reach 150 million euros.
The Congress has approved the initiative to embargo the purchase and sale of weapons to Israel, with the support of PSOE and Junts. The transit of all ships carrying fuels destined for the Israeli armed forces will be prohibited in Spanish ports, and entry into Spanish airspace will be denied to all aircraft of the State that transport defense materials destined for Israel.
The consular services provided to Spanish citizens resident in the illegal Israeli settlements will be limited to the minimum legally required.
The Spanish Government has also condemned the horrible attack by the Hamas terrorist group and the terrorist attack in Jerusalem that resulted in the death of at least six people, including a Spaniard.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar described Spain's policy as "hostile to Israel" and attributed it to "the corrupt Sánchez Government's attempt to deflect attention from serious corruption scandals." However, the Spanish Government has categorically rejected the accusations of antisemitism made by Israel. The Government has defended the measures announced by Sánchez, arguing that they "respond to the majority sentiment of Spanish society."
The Spanish Government is not alone in its stance. Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and Spain itself are among the countries showing solidarity with measures against Israel.
