Spanish Vuelta: Marc Soler Alone Wins Stage 14 atop Alto de la Farrapona
In the heart of Asturias, the 14th stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España proved to be a gruelling challenge, with almost 4,000m of elevation and a short but vicious course. This stage was the fourth stage in a row won by UAE Team Emirates-XRG, making it their seventh stage victory in total.
The race began with a pro-Palestine protest blocking the peloton for a moment, adding an unexpected twist to the day's events. However, the action quickly resumed as Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates-XRG made his move before the foot of the 16.9km ascent.
Soler attacked with determination, quickly distancing himself from the pack. Englishman Shaw launched an attack straight into the descent, but was caught before they reached the 16.9km to go mark. The leading GC duo, Jonas Vingegaard and João Almeida, found themselves chasing Soler, with Visma's Jonas Vingegaard having Matteo Jorgenson, Sepp Kuss, and Ben Tulett for company, equal to UAE's team strength.
UAE's support train, including Ivo Oliveira and Novak, increased the tempo during the penultimate climb, causing several riders to drop, including Egan Bernal of Ineos Grenadiers. Soler's lead was at 2:45 with 6km to go and the most difficult part of the climb soon to come.
In the final stages of the climb, only Almeida, Vingegaard, Pidcock, Kuss, Gall, Riccitello, and Træen remained in the red jersey group. Soler's courage and resilience paid off as he crossed the finish line first, securing his fourth career Vuelta stage win. This victory was particularly sweet for Soler, as it righted the wrongs of his loss atop the same climb five years earlier.
Jai Hindley of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe finished in fourth place, while Jasper Philipsen, the sprinter from Alpecin-Deceuninck, dominated the sprint finishes at the race, winning the fourth sprint in a row and the seventh overall at the 2025 Vuelta a España.
In the fight for the podium, Jai Hindley gained 10 seconds on Tom Pidcock, narrowing the gap between them. The 2025 Vuelta a España continues to deliver thrilling performances and unexpected twists, with Soler's victory in the 14th stage being a testament to the fierce competition and determination of the riders.
