SPD in Hamburg open to considering the admission of children from Gaza
In a show of solidarity, several German cities have expressed their readiness to accept children from the Gaza Strip, as the situation in the region continues to deteriorate.
The SPD faction, led by Dirk Kienscherf, has explicitly supported the renewed demand of the federal government for the observance of international law in this context. Kienscherf stated that the situation for the civilian population in Gaza is catastrophic, especially for families and children, with medical care having collapsed and hunger and misery becoming everyday life.
The Hanseatic city of Hamburg, led by Minister President Olaf Lies (SPD), has already accepted over 1,800 people since 2021 as part of federal humanitarian programs. Hamburg, along with other cities such as Hannover, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Leipzig, Kiel, Freiburg, and Potsdam, are now prepared to accept injured children from the Gaza Strip. These cities offer clinics for their treatment.
The red-green Senate of Hamburg, like the SPD, supports the observance of international law in the context of accepting refugees from the Gaza Strip. However, they seek clarification on several questions for acceptance, including age groups, severity of injuries/illnesses, accompanying persons, and security checks for accommodation and care of relatives.
The mayors of several German cities, including Hamburg, have written to Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, asking for support from the federal government in accepting children from the Gaza Strip and Israel. The response from the red-green Senate to a minor request from the SPD faction indicates their readiness to support the acceptance of particularly vulnerable people.
The SPD and the red-green Senate are fundamentally ready to support the federal government in accepting these children under certain conditions. The federal Ministry of the Interior and the Chancellery, however, have reacted cautiously to the planned acceptance.
This initiative includes the acceptance of severely injured or ill children from Palestinian areas. It's a significant step towards providing much-needed aid and support to those in dire need. The hope is that this action will not only provide immediate relief but also contribute to long-term peace and stability in the region.
