SPD selects Willingmann as their representative candidate
In the heart of Quedlinburg, the state party conference of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Saxony-Anhalt took place recently. The event was marked by a significant moment as Environment Minister Armin Willingmann was unanimously chosen as the party's top candidate for the 2026 state election.
Armin Willingmann, an experienced Spitzenkandidat, received an impressive 99% of the votes, with one abstention. This overwhelming support underscores the confidence the party has in Willingmann's leadership.
Federal party leader Lars Klingbeil, who delivered a speech at the conference, emphasised the importance of the upcoming election campaign. He described it as a "struggle for political models," highlighting the need for the SPD to always be clearly recognizable and to advocate for a policy that builds bridges.
Willingmann, currently serving as Minister for Science, Energy, Climate Protection, and Environment, and Deputy Minister-President in a coalition government with CDU and FDP, has a political approach that focuses on gaining voters' trust and forming a democratic centrist government amid challenges from AfD and CDU.
Lars Klingbeil reiterated these sentiments, stating that the SPD must always be clearly recognizable. He also emphasised the need for a policy that builds bridges, a sentiment that resonated with the delegates at the conference.
MDR was present to capture the event, providing a visual record of this significant moment in the SPD's journey towards the 2026 state election. With Willingmann as their top candidate, the party is poised to face the challenges of the election campaign with renewed vigour.
It is worth noting that no other candidates were mentioned for the 2026 state election apart from Willingmann, making him the sole contender for the top position. As the party gears up for the election, Willingmann's leadership and the SPD's commitment to building bridges and maintaining a clear political identity will undoubtedly play a crucial role.
