Speedy train ablaze prompts mass evacuation
On Saturday, August 30, 2025, a fire broke out in the rear carriage of an Alvia high-speed train belonging to Renfe, causing the evacuation of 210 passengers. The incident occurred around 2.05pm near Argamasilla de Calatrava in Ciudad Real province.
The Guardia Civil oversaw the evacuation process, ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers. The diverse group on board included tourists from Japan, Italy, and Germany. Elderly travellers and a baby were among those evacuated, all reported to be in good health.
Heavy smoke was produced by the fire, and operations remained suspended until firefighters from Puertollano completed their work. The train was stranded between Puertollano and Argamasilla. Provisions, particularly water, were reported to be scarce on the train during the ordeal.
Authorities assured the evacuated passengers that it was safe to return to the train once the fire was extinguished. A rescue train was arranged to continue the journey to Madrid for the evacuated passengers.
Passengers walked approximately 350 meters through fields alongside the tracks during the evacuation. This unfortunate incident caused many tourists to risk missing connecting trains or flights due to the delay.
The Madrid to Andalucia high-speed line has faced problems throughout summer 2025, including wildfires, a crumbling tunnel, and stolen electricity cables. The firefighting organization during the incident was led by the local emergency services coordinated by the Ciudad Real provincial authorities.
As of 2.55pm, Adif reported no estimated time for resuming service on the high-speed line. The incident resulted in all trains on the line being stopped. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that can arise in travel and the importance of safety measures in place to handle such incidents.
