In the vibrant cultural scene of Montreal, several notable events are scheduled for the coming week.

Firstly, British composer James Holden and Polish musician Wacław Zimpel will perform together at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT) on Friday evening. Their collaboration, which places the material of the album The Universe Will Take Care of You on the outskirts of the work of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, icons of spiritual jazz, promises an elusive sound that is too fleshy and dynamic to be qualified as ambient, but not rhythmic enough to be danceable.

Wacław Zimpel's goal with these two projects is to offer listeners beautiful music that helps them feel better, which he calls spiritual music. The duo will be joined by British composer Sam Shackleton and singer Siddhartha Belmannu for a meditative and spiritual performance at the A/Visions 2 program on August 23 at the Maisonneuve Theatre.

Shackleton will also perform at the Nocturne 5 program at the SAT on August 24 starting at 10:45 PM. Marcus Schmickler, who performed with Wacław Zimpel at the MUTEK event on August 20, 2021, and also released an album with him, will join Shackleton for this performance.

Meanwhile, on August 20 at 10:30 PM at the SAT, the duo of Holden and Zimpel will present a concert as part of the Nocturne 1 program of the Mutek festival.

The album The Universe Will Take Care of You by James Holden and Wacław Zimpel was released last June on Border Community Records, the influential label headed by James Holden. Wacław Zimpel, a prominent saxophonist on the Polish jazz scene, spent formative years in Chicago, integrating into the free-jazz scene.

In other news, Shackleton, Zimpel, and Belmannu will soon present a new album from their meditative and spiritual project after spending several weeks in India last spring. Two experts are decrypting how armed far-right groups organize themselves in Canada.

Sadly, we also report the passing of magazine editor Isabelle Vaillancourt on Sunday.

Lastly, the company Marinvest Energy wants to build a plant and a marine export terminal in Baie-Comeau. More information on this development is expected in the coming days.
