SPÖ leads election polls over FPÖ; Greens trail behind ÖVP and Neos in the same survey
Vienna City Council Election: Current Trends and Projections
The Vienna City Council or State Parliament election is scheduled for April 27, 2023. As the date approaches, the race to secure seats in the Vienna City Senate is heating up.
The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPO) currently leads in the election trend, with 38.9% of the vote. The Greens follow closely, maintaining a stable vote share of around 12% since January. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) is in third place, with 21.7% of the vote, a significant increase of 14.5% compared to their 2020 result.
The FPÖ's historically best result was 30.79% in 2015, but they managed to secure 41.6% in the 2020 election. However, they have experienced slight losses since early April.
The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) has gained some ground and is currently at 11.2%, closely following the Greens. Vienna's ÖVP is projected to suffer massive losses compared to the 2020 election, with a potential loss of 9.2% based on current standings.
NEOS is currently in fifth place with a trend value of 9.3%, which would represent an increase of 1.8% from the last election. KPO, unfortunately, has little chance of entering the city council, as they are currently at 3.7%, well below the necessary threshold of five percent.
Strache's Liste Team HC Strache is unlikely to enter the Vienna City Council, as they are currently polling at around two percent.
It's important to note that a repeat of the Red-Pink coalition is not yet guaranteed, despite NEOS's current standing. The two parties currently hold 54 of the 100 seats in the Vienna City Council, and negotiations after the election will be crucial in determining the future coalition.
As of April 27, 2023, the parties expected to receive at least five percent of the votes and thus be represented in the Vienna City Senate are the SPO, ÖVP, FPÖ, and the Greens. The race remains tight, and the final results will be determined on election day.
