Spotlight on Mick Schumacher: Rumors Swirl Over Potential Alteration in WEC

The world of motorsport is abuzz with speculation surrounding Mick Schumacher's future in the 2025 World Endurance Championship (WEC). The penultimate race weekend of the season is scheduled for September 5-7 in Austin, but the focus is squarely on the German driver's next move.

Rumours have been circulating that Schumacher might be leaving Alpine Motorsport mid-season. However, these rumours have been met with denials from Cadillac, who have reportedly offered Schumacher a full-time WEC seat and a reserve driver job in Formula 1 for 2026. Yet, Schumacher is said to have turned down this offer.

Meanwhile, Schumacher's seat at Alpine might not remain vacant for long. Antonio Felix da Costa, who has been doing all the qualifying sessions in the sister Alpine with the starting number #35 this year, is rumoured to be joining the team for the WEC season 2026. If this comes to pass, da Costa would be taking over Mick Schumacher's place.

Da Costa's potential move to Alpine may not involve replacing Jenson Button, as British driver Callum Ilott is now said to be the new favourite for Button's seat.

In the midst of this, Andre Lotterer and Pipo Derani have already filled two seats for Genesis Magna Racing's debut year in 2026. There are whispers that Stoffel Vandoorne might join Genesis Magna Racing, leaving Peugeot mid-season. Nick Cassidy has been officially confirmed as a full-time driver for Peugeot in 2026, and Theo Pourchaire is speculated to rise to the rank of full-time pilot for Peugeot in the same year.

Schumacher's current team, Alpine, has been treating him favourably. He has been driving all qualifying sessions in the #36 Alpine A424 since the start of the season, and he always gets more fresh tires in free practice sessions than his teammates.

In the meantime, da Costa has reportedly been secured by Alpine for an endurance racing role, and Nico Müller is rumoured to replace him at Porsche in Formula E.

At Cadillac, there is complete equality among the drivers, with no privileges for any driver, including former Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button.

As the WEC season reaches its climax, the future of some of its top drivers remains uncertain. The race to secure the best talent in the sport continues, with Mick Schumacher at the centre of international speculation regarding his next move. Stay tuned for more updates as the story unfolds.
