Tesla Unveils New Buttons on Refreshed Model S Steering Wheel
Tesla has made some changes to the control interface of its Model S, as images posted to the company's website reveal the presence of new buttons on the steering wheel. These buttons are not present on the very first yoke steering wheel spotted in California in February.
After announcing the refresh Model S in January, multiple sightings of test vehicles on public roads have been reported. One such vehicle, spotted in Florida, features new buttons or protrusions on the side of the scroll wheels. However, it is difficult to determine what these buttons could be for, as there are no visible markings.
The new buttons could be related to the functions of turn signals, wipers, and voice commands, but their purpose is yet to be confirmed. According to The Kilowatts, the new buttons may serve as tactile guides to help drivers locate the buttons on the steering wheel without taking their eyes off the road.
The bottom of the steering wheel in the latest version disappears into the rim of the yoke, unlike previous versions. This design change is part of Tesla's shift from traditional stalks to new steering wheel buttons for functions like turn signals and wipers, which were reintroduced after customer feedback on earlier removals in recent facelifted Tesla models.
A user named Aaron (@AaronS5_) shared pictures of the car on Twitter, and his handle is dated May 11, 2021. Additional pictures of the Model S were taken in Florida this morning, showing new defrost lines around the front cameras.
Some of these test vehicles now have the new yoke steering wheel. However, the first deliveries of the refreshed Model S are yet to be scheduled.
In images posted to Tesla's website, the new buttons are located in the area where the turn signals are on the left and the wiper controls and voice command button is on the right. The two new buttons or protrusions on the sides of the Model S steering wheel air scrolls are also part of this updated control interface.
