St. Pauli's questionable play was noticed by Kuntz, while Polzin criticizes HSV for their misdeeds during the match in St. Pauli.
In the latest City Derby, Hamburg SV (HSV) suffered a defeat at the hands of St. Pauli, with the match marred by a controversial incident involving HSV player Gocholeishvili.
The turning point of the game came in the 54th minute, when Gocholeishvili received a yellow-red card for a foul on Nicolás Capaldo. The incident occurred as Capaldo was running on the height of his knee, with HSV's right-back Arkadiusz Pyrka making contact with the sole of his foot. Despite Capaldo collapsing in pain, Pyrka was only shown a yellow card due to initially touching the ball first and the foul being seen as under pressure.
However, HSV's sports director, Stefan Kuntz, considered the foul to be worthy of a red card and was surprised that it was not reviewed by VAR. Kuntz did not want his statements to be perceived as seeking excuses for the loss, but he did express his surprise at the decision.
Gocholeishvili's dismissal left HSV playing with ten men for the remainder of the match, and St. Pauli capitalised on their advantage. Just a few minutes after Pyrka's foul and yellow card, St. Pauli increased their lead to 2:0 through Andréas Hountondji.
In the aftermath of the defeat, HSV coach Polzin acknowledged the deserved loss but did not blame the referees for the outcome. Polzin was also critical of Gocholeishvili's unsportsmanlike behaviour that led to his first yellow card, as well as his excessive gesturing about a throw-in decision. Gocholeishvili's unnecessary first warning ultimately proved his downfall.
Despite the loss, Polzin preempted that HSV would not be poor losers regarding Gocholeishvili's red card. In fact, the coach acknowledged that HSV has much to learn from the defeat.
On a positive note, the suspension of Gocholeishvili could provide an opportunity for William Mikelbrencis, the first backup on the right-back position, to benefit from the absence of the red card recipient.
Kuntz stated that St. Pauli deserved to win the match, and Nicolai Remberg, a HSV player, agreed, stating that HSV was down to ten men due to Gocholeishvili's second yellow card.
The defeat means that HSV will have to regroup and prepare for their next match, with Gocholeishvili set to be suspended for the away game against FC Bayern on September 13.
