Kenya is gearing up for a significant transformation in its sports infrastructure, with the construction of new stadiums and renovation of existing ones. The focus is on preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and the centrepiece of this initiative is the Talanta Sports City Stadium in Nairobi.

The Talanta Stadium, a 60,000-seater arena, is under construction at the Jamhuri Sports Complex. The project, over 50% complete, is being built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces. The stadium is expected to be completed within two years.

The Talanta Stadium will not only serve as a venue for AFCON but will also house training facilities for various sports, including rugby, tennis, and hockey. The stadium's construction is a reflection of strong investor confidence, as evidenced by the Ksh44.79 billion infrastructure bond it received.

Nyayo Stadium, another historical stadium in Nairobi, is also undergoing a facelift. The media centre, gymnasium facilities, and changing rooms will be renovated. The swimming pool and running track will undergo renovations as well, with the latter being upgraded to meet World Athletics standards. A modern canopy with energy-saving lighting systems will be installed, and the VIP section's sitting capacity will be increased to meet international standards.

President William Ruto has announced the construction of 25 new stadiums nationwide, in addition to the Talanta Stadium and upgrades at Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums. Counties including Kilifi, Murang'a, and Nyeri are seeing multi-million shilling stadium upgrades and expansions to meet CAF/FIFA standards.

The Moi International Sports Complex is also part of this infrastructure overhaul. Renovation works will be conducted, including the construction of two training grounds and upgrading the running tracks.

Interestingly, the Talanta Stadium, initially designed as a futuristic "spaceship," has been transformed with Maasai shield motifs, reflecting Kenya's rich cultural heritage. The construction and renovation works on the Talanta Stadium, as well as three historical stadiums (Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani Stadium, and the Nyayo National Stadium), are being handled by the Ministry of Defence of Kenya.

As Kenya prepares for the 2027 AFCON competition, it is also competing with Uganda, Tanzania, Algeria, Egypt, and Botswana for the right to co-host the event. The details regarding the funding of the construction and renovation budgets for the Talanta Stadium, Kasarani Stadium, Nyayo National Stadium, and Moi International Sports Center are not currently available.
