Vuelta a España 2025: Stage 15 Drama as Pedersen Claims Victory

The 15th stage of the Vuelta a España 2025 saw a thrilling race, with Mads Pedersen (Denmark, Lidl-Trek) emerging victorious. The stage, which took place on Puerto a Garganta, presented a challenging 16.4km climb with an average gradient of 5.1%.

The early part of the race saw a breakaway, with Pedersen among the riders vying to get into the day's break due to his aggressive riding in the whole Vuelta. Jakub Otruba was the first rider to attack and gain a gap, leading the race for a while. Four more riders joined the chase group, including Frigo, Aular, Dunbar, and Sheffield.

However, the real battle unfolded further up the mountain. Jay Vine and Michał Kwiatkowski managed to go clear from the rest of the chase group, which had continued to swell as more riders leaped out of the peloton into it. This trio made the most of a steady uphill section to build a gap over the rest, with Vine and Vervaeke leading the way, currently 45 seconds ahead of their pursuers.

Meanwhile, the group behind, which was 30 seconds behind, could yet come back into contention. The peloton, led by Bahrain, was pushing hard to preserve Traen's place in the top ten.

The chase group, now including Pedersen, Leemreize, and others, started to close the gap, with the turns being shared. Vine and Vervaeke were eventually caught by the chase group with only 7km to go. The gap between Vine and Vervaeke and the chasers started to come down, currently at 2:20.

Sheffield crashed with only 3km left, but managed to get back on his bike. The chase group, now working well together, continued to press on. Pedersen, Aular, Frigo, Dunbar, and Buitrago were still together as they entered the final kilometre.

In a fierce sprint finish, Pedersen crossed the line first, with Aular a distant second and Frigo completing the podium in third. The gap between Pedersen and the rest of the pack was significant, reflecting his dominance in the race so far.

Pedersen now has a huge lead in the green jersey classification. Junior Lecerf moved up to tenth on the virtual standings, pushing Jorgenson out of the top ten. The stage also saw changes in the General Classification, with Lecerf moving up to 9th, while Traen and Jorgenson moved down to 10th and 11th respectively.

The top 3 sprint finishers at the end of Stage 15 of the Vuelta a España 2025 were Mads Pedersen (Denmark, Lidl-Trek) in first place, Orluis Aular (Venezuela, Movistar) in second, and Marco Frigo (Italy, Israel – Premier Tech) in third. The race continues tomorrow with Stage 16, promising more excitement and challenges for the riders.
