Stage 3 of the Simac Ladies Tour witnesses Lorena Wiebes claiming her third consecutive sprint victory, as strategic groupings disrupt the peloton dramatically
In the picturesque town of Zeewolde, the Simac Ladies Tour continued its thrilling run, with stage 3 culminating in a commanding victory for Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime).
Wiebes, who has been a force to reckon with this season, added another win to her tally, finishing ahead of Megan Jastrab (Picnic PostNL) and Amalie Dideriksen (Cofidis). The race, which spanned 160.1km, was not without its challenges, as strong winds caused major splits and echelons in the peloton.
The race's final 10km saw an interesting development when Femke Markus (SD Worx-Protime), Wiebes' teammate, took the lead. However, inside the last 10km, the leaders collaborated and settled into a pace, with Wiebes comfortably positioned near the back.
The pace slowed with 8km remaining, as all riders focused on Wiebes and aiming to disrupt her win. Team Visma-Lease a Bike's Vigié and SD Worx-Protime's Markus pulled the field into 5km to go. Despite these efforts, Wiebes' sprint was unmatched, and she crossed the finish line first.
The race's front group, which included Nicole Steigenga (AG Insurance-Soudal Team), Zoe Bäckstedt (Canyon//SRAM Racing), Christina Schweinberger (Fenix-Deceuninck), Lily Williams (Human Powered Health), Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek), Marie Le Net (FDJ-Suez), Cat Ferguson (Movistar Team), Babette van der Wolf (EF Education-Oatly), and Amalie Dideriksen (Cofidis Women Team), formed in the first 40km of the race.
Notably, Wiebes was supported by her team SD Worx-Protime throughout the Simac Ladies Tour, especially during the entire stage 6 and in the closing kilometers. In the final sprint, she launched from the train of Visma-Lease a Bike riders.
The victory extends Wiebes' lead in the overall classification, with three stage wins under her belt. Nienke Veenhoven (Team Visma Lease a Bike) finished in 4th place, while Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) took 5th.
The riders in the group prepared for both crosswinds and positioning, tossing their water bottles on the roadside while racing toward the final stretch. Despite the challenges, the race concluded in an exciting display of cycling prowess, with Lorena Wiebes once again proving her dominance.
