Stand-up comedian Marc Maron discloses the financial expense he incurred to incorporate Taylor Swift's music in one of his comedy performances.

Paying a significant sum for Taylor Swift's music is a hefty expense, as comedian Marc Maron discovered, noting a figure around $50,000 on the July 24th episode of Vulture's "Good One" podcast. He made every effort to incorporate the joke despite the steep cost.

Stand-up comedian Marc Maron discloses the financial expense he incurred to incorporate Taylor Swift's music in one of his comedy performances.

In a recent turn of events, comedian Marc Maron managed to secure the rights to use Taylor Swift's song "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" in his comedy show, despite the significant fee associated with using the pop star's music.

Maron's request was approved by Swift's team, but the process of licensing the song from her 2022 album Midnights was not an easy one. Jack Antonoff, a cowriter on "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" and Swift's longtime collaborator, advised Maron to go through proper channels to secure the rights.

The special version of Maron's show was successful enough to cover the usage fee for "Bigger Than the Whole Sky." However, if Maron had used more than a minute of the song, he would have had to pay a higher fee.

Maron found "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" particularly moving due to its message about grief and loss. He needed to play the song during his shows due to a personal history with it. In fact, Maron experienced a fainting episode while hiking after listening to the song.

Maron discussed his connection to Swift's music and "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" in detail on his podcast. It's unclear if Swift herself heard Maron's joke or not.

Maron, who is 61 years old, first revealed his appreciation for Swift's discography on a May 2023 episode of his "WTF" podcast. During the episode, he performed a rendition of "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" in his comedy shows.

Despite the rumours, there is no verified source confirming that a musician has demanded a licensing fee of approximately $50,000 USD from Maron for using one of Swift's songs in a project. Conversations about high fees for music rights organisations like GEMA, ASCAP, and BMI are common in the podcast and comedy world, but concrete cases involving well-known artists and such amounts are not documented.
