Star cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin signs up for auction in a T20 league following his retirement from the IPL
Ravichandran Ashwin Announces Retirement from IPL and Signs up for ILT20 Auction
Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has ended his Indian Premier League (IPL) career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker with a remarkable 187 wickets in 221 games, at an economy rate of 7.2. After a successful IPL journey spanning across multiple franchises, Ashwin has announced his retirement from the league due to the demanding three-month schedule, finding it physically and mentally draining at this stage of his career.
Ashwin, who is 38 years old, started his IPL career with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and ended it with the same franchise. Along the way, he also played for Rising Pune Supergiant (now defunct), Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and captained Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). Ashwin's IPL career was not just about wickets; he also scored 833 runs with the bat at a strike rate of 118, including a fifty.
In a surprising move, Ashwin has submitted his name for the International League T20 (ILT20) auction, scheduled to take place on September 30 in Dubai. If selected, Ashwin would be the most high-profile Indian cricketer to play in the UAE league. The ILT20 has six franchises: MI Emirates, Gulf Giants, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Sharjah Warriorz, Dubai Capitals, and Desert Vipers.
Ashwin has reportedly received assurances from an ILT20 franchise before enrolling for the auction. If selected, Ashwin would participate in the upcoming season of the UAE league, scheduled to run from December 2 to January 4 next year.
Apart from the ILT20, Ashwin is also likely to feature in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA and The Hundred in England next year. With his retirement from the IPL, Ashwin is looking forward to new challenges and opportunities in the world of T20 cricket.
