Star player Caitlin Clark of the WNBA's Fever will miss the entire 2025 season due to an injury, expressing her disappointment as 'incredibly frustrating'.
Stephanie White, the head coach of the Indiana Fever, is facing a challenging decision as star player Caitlin Clark has announced she will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season due to a groin injury.
Clark, who was named an All-Star this season, has been sidelined since July 15, marking an injury-plagued sophomore campaign for the young talent. Her absence has been keenly felt, with the Fever's record dropping from 8-5 with Clark in the lineup to 13-15 without her.
White has been cautious with Clark's return, wanting to see her participate in multiple practices before reintroducing her to game action. However, Clark has not been a full participant in practice this week, and her lack of contact drills has delayed her return.
Despite the setback, Clark has been diligent in her rehabilitation, spending hours in the gym each day with the singular goal of getting back out there. White, recognising the importance of Clark's contribution, wants to ensure there's no regression in her performance due to fatigue when she does return.
In the 13 games she played this season, Clark averaged an impressive 16.5 points and 8.8 assists per game. Her absence leaves a significant gap in the Fever's offensive strategy, particularly her long-range shooting, as she shot only 27.9% from 3-point range on eight attempts per game.
The Fever, currently holding the eighth and final playoff spot with a record of 21-20, are just 1 ½ games up on the ninth-place Sparks, who own the tiebreaker between the two teams. White will need to rally her team to continue their playoff push without Clark in the lineup.
Clark, showing her resilience, has called on the Fever to carry on without her, expressing frustration with her lack of progress in her recovery. The injury-plagued season has been a disappointment for the WNBA, the Indiana Fever, and herself, but Clark's determination remains undeterred.
As the Fever prepare for their first-round playoff opponent, either the Atlanta Dream or Las Vegas Aces, with White actively coaching them from Indianapolis, the team will need to find ways to compensate for Clark's absence and navigate the playoffs with the same focus, experience, and flexibility that White has instilled in them throughout the season.
