Steep climb in recent COVID-19 cases
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has reported that on Wednesday, Germany recorded 3,950 new coronavirus infections within 24 hours, the highest daily figure since early April. This increase represents a 65% rise compared to the average of recent days.
Concurrently, the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units is showing an increase. As of Wednesday evening, there were 469 COVID-19 patients in intensive care units nationwide. Around 1.6% of the currently acutely infected patients were being treated in intensive care units.
In May and June, the number of intensive care patients was almost ten percent of all acutely ill patients, but the current number of new coronavirus infections is not yet at the peak level seen in April. At the peak of the pandemic in April, there were almost 3,000 intensive care patients.
The data on new infections and patients in intensive care units is being reported by direct inquiries with the 401 urban and rural districts in Germany. However, the data does not include the current number of acutely infected patients in Germany.
The region with the strongest increase in new coronavirus infections since spring is the city of Ingolstadt in Bavaria, which had the highest incidence with 37 on August 31, 2025, while Bavaria as a whole had the highest incidence among German states at 14.4.
It's important to note that while the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units is increasing, it is still relatively moderate compared to the peak of the pandemic in April. The data provided by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) will continue to be monitored closely to track the progression of the pandemic in Germany.
