Heavy Storms Cause Flooding in Dormagen, Fire Department Responds to 15 Incidents
On Tuesday, September 9th, the city of Dormagen was hit by heavy thunderstorms that brought up to 90 liters of rain per square meter, according to local reports. The Dormagen Fire Department was called into action, responding to a total of 15 storm-related incidents.
The operations began on Monday, September 8th, around 9:30 PM, with units from the Stadtmitte, Zons, Delhoven, Stürzelberg, and the full-time station all participating. The main areas affected were Dormagen city center, Horrem, and Zons.
All emergency calls were related to flooding due to the persistent rain. The sports halls of the Rachel-Carson School in Horrem on Bahnhofstraße and the sports halls of TSV Bayer Dormagen at An der Römerziegelei were among the affected sites. Firefighters were also called to the underpass at Zonser Straße.
Despite the challenging conditions, no injuries were reported during the operations. The Gohr unit provided support in the municipality of Rommerskirchen at several locations, but there is no specific information available regarding their involvement on September 8, 2020, at 15:00.
The German Weather Service had predicted rainfall of between 35 and 60 liters per square meter within six hours until 11 AM on Tuesday. The Dormagen Fire Department completed all operations around 1:30 AM, with a total of 66 firefighters involved.
A large supermarket was also affected by the flooding, but thankfully, no serious damage was reported. The city of Dormagen was able to weather the storm thanks to the quick and efficient response of the Dormagen Fire Department.
