Strained Survival: Scorching Temperatures and Food Scarcity Fuse Deadly Conditions in Gaza City

In the heart of Gaza City, a humanitarian crisis is unfolding. Caroline Willemen, project coordinator for Doctors Without Borders, has reported a significant increase in malnourished patients at their primary healthcare center over the past month.

The affected population includes children between six months and five years old, as well as pregnant and lactating women. This vulnerable group is struggling to recover from wounds due to widespread malnutrition and starvation, which weaken the body's capacity to heal.

The ongoing violence in Gaza City is another pressing issue. Willemen has spoken to a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the leg at the Zikim crossing and a 30-year-old father who was shot in the back and in the arm, had his arm amputated, and was injured while attempting to get food. Desperate people continue to risk their lives by going to the border crossing, with some being shot and injured or killed in the process.

The increased displacement in Gaza City due to the rise in strikes is making mass movement difficult. This, combined with the severe food insecurity, limited medical aid, and challenging living conditions amid ongoing violence, greatly diminishes the chances of effective healing for injured civilians.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification system has reported that 514,000 people in Gaza are currently experiencing famine, a number expected to rise to 641,000 by the end of September. The food situation in the market has improved slightly in the last few weeks, but many people without access to cash are still unable to purchase food, and for those who do have money, food is extremely expensive.

The heatwaves in Gaza City are exacerbating the already dire food and water situation. The extreme heat is causing weakness among people, including healthcare workers, who are affected by the same issues as the general population, including lack of food and sleep. The medical team in Gaza City has stated that patients are not healing as quickly as they should due to lack of nutrients.

Willemen emphasizes the need for an immediate and sustained ceasefire as the first step towards improving the situation in Gaza City. She expresses skepticism about the impact of recent announcements, stating that she has been advocating for weeks without significant results. However, she remains hopeful that the interview will bring attention to the dire situation in Gaza City and encourage action towards a ceasefire and aid.
