Strategic measures implementing in Brussels to bolster water protection and reassure its safety
EU Adopts Water Resilience Strategy to Combat Water-Related Risks
The European Commission has taken a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable water future by adopting the EU Water Resilience Strategy. This strategy, developed and adopted by the Commission, aims to restore and protect the water cycle, secure clean and affordable water for all, and create a sustainable, resilient water-economy in Europe.
The strategy is a response to the increasing challenges posed by extreme weather events, such as catastrophic floods, prolonged droughts, and forest fires, which have been affecting Europe. These events have had a profound impact on citizens, farmers, the environment, and businesses, causing health issues, disruptions in energy, food, and drinking water supply, and growing economic losses across the EU.
Recognising the critical role of water in our lives, the strategy sets three key objectives: restoring and protecting the water cycle, building a water-smart economy, and safeguarding water and water ecosystems for future generations. To achieve these objectives, the strategy will support EU Member States in managing water more efficiently through the implementation of current EU water legislation and over 30 actions.
One of the primary focuses of the strategy is improving water efficiency. The objective is to improve water efficiency in the EU by at least 10% until 2030, and Member States are recommended to set their own targets for water efficiency based on their territorial and national circumstances. The Commission has also published a Recommendation on Water Efficiency, providing guiding principles to reduce water consumption.
Consumers and businesses are highlighted as essential in saving water at home or at work. The strategy promotes the exchange of best practices to raise public and sector-specific awareness. It emphasises the importance of consumer and business awareness for water conservation, with the aim of creating a culture of water saving and efficiency.
The strategy also addresses the top ten global risks for businesses, five of which are water-related. It seeks to improve water retention on land, prevent water pollution, tackle pollutants in drinking water, including PFAS, and secure clean and affordable water and sanitation for all.
However, the strategy does not introduce any new actions or measures for managing water more efficiently beyond the implementation of existing EU water legislation and the over 30 actions outlined in the strategy. It does not repeat previous objectives but instead focuses on raising awareness and promoting best practices.
In conclusion, the EU Water Resilience Strategy is a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable water future for Europe. By focusing on restoring and protecting the water cycle, building a water-smart economy, and safeguarding water and water ecosystems for future generations, the strategy aims to create a Europe that is resilient to water-related risks and able to provide clean and affordable water for all.
