Strategies to navigate roadways near UAE schools without incurring penalties for unsafe driving
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the roads near schools and school buses are not just ordinary paths. They are zones where safety is paramount, and rules are strictly enforced.
Violating school zone rules during school runs can lead to hefty fines. Drivers who exceed the speed limit by up to 20 km/h can expect to pay a fine of Dh300, while those going 30 km/h over the limit will be fined Dh600. If you're speeding by up to 40 km/h, you'll be slapped with a fine of Dh700.
Ignoring school bus stop signs is a serious offence that comes with a fine of Dh1,000 and 10 black points. Misusing the horn or car sound system in a disruptive way can also lead to a Dh400 fine and four black points.
On both single-lane and multi-lane roads, drivers must maintain a safe distance of at least five metres when a school bus displays a stop sign. On single-lane roads, all vehicles in both directions must stop and keep a five-metre distance from the bus. On multi-lane roads, only vehicles travelling in the same direction as the bus must stop and stay at least five metres away.
Drivers should also be aware of the larger blind spots school buses have and watch for sudden movements by children, who can be unpredictable near schools. Emergency lanes should be kept clear, and drivers should stick to the speed limit, which is usually reduced in school zones.
Loud noises near schools and school buses can startle children and create dangerous situations, leading to a Dh400 fine and four black points. To avoid such situations, drivers are advised to avoid distractions, such as using their phones, while driving in or near school zones.
Drivers in Dubai should also avoid parking in restricted spaces, use designated school pick-up and drop-off points, and not stop on the opposite side of the road from a school.
The Ministry of Interior in the UAE has launched campaigns such as 'A Day Without Accidents' and 'A Safe School Year', emphasising the importance of road safety in school zones. The campaigns started on August 25, 2025.
Remember, the safety of children is everyone's responsibility. By following these rules, drivers can help ensure a safe school year for everyone.
