Streets of Washington D.C.'s U Street Corridor to be under a new youth curfew, effective from Thursday onwards, according to authorities.
New Curfew Zones Established in Washington City
In response to ongoing public safety concerns, the city of Washington has established new curfew zones, effective from August 21. These zones are part of an effort to keep young people off the streets at night.
The first of these zones is along the U Street Corridor, and the second is in the Navy Yard area. The curfew zones will be in effect from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily, until August 24. Those caught in violation can face arrest.
Within these zones, individuals aged 17 and under are prohibited from gathering in groups of nine or more in public spaces or businesses. This rule is part of a special juvenile curfew zone, authorised under the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025.
The Juvenile Care Emergency Act of 2025 also authorised Police Chief Angela Martinez to establish these special youth curfew zones. She has the authority to designate areas for targeted curfews in response to public safety concerns.
It's important to note that the curfew zones do not apply to exempted activities. However, the specific nature of the public safety concerns in both the Navy Yard area and the U Street Corridor has not been disclosed.
The citywide juvenile curfew, which requires those under 18 to be off the streets between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., remains in place through Aug. 31. The National Guard is present in the city as part of a crime crackdown effort led by the White House.
These new curfew zones are not the only ones established. The city is taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of its residents, particularly young people, during the nighttime hours. It's advised for everyone to stay informed and adhere to the curfew rules for the safety of all.
