Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of the highly anticipated Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, has shared insights into the project's development at Gamescom 2025.
Hayasaka emphasised the importance of striking a balance when modernising older games. He explained that changing everything could lead to people saying the game is no longer the same, while keeping everything the same could result in people saying they already have the original game.
The "new twist" in the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, according to Hayasaka, is a "really big surprise" for veteran fans. This surprise is part of a comprehensive overhaul that includes updated graphics, additional content, gameplay improvements, and quality-of-life features. The changes aim to guide player behaviour to be more streamlined and accessible compared to the original games, smoothing exploration and combat pacing without compromising the core classic experience.
Hayasaka noted that everyone has a different answer regarding what to change and whatnot in the modernisation process. He stressed that getting the balance right is something that requires careful thought and consideration.
The Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is a collaboration between Artdink and Square Enix's Team Asano. The HD-2D remakes of the two beloved JRPGs will feature completely overhauled graphics in the HD-2D style, additional content, gameplay improvements such as target markers and auto-battle functions, and quality-of-life features designed to modernise the experience while preserving the original charm.
