Strong surge in childcare spaces required
Boom in Childcare Demand in Nordhorn
Nordhorn, a city in the County of Grafschaft Bentheim, has seen a significant surge in demand for childcare spaces over the past year. According to the latest figures, the city has surpassed the nationwide average target for care spots for children between 1 and 3 years old, with around 50 percent of children in this age group provided with a care spot.
The demand for childcare spaces in Nordhorn daycare centers is higher than anticipated, with this year's registration numbers significantly surpassing last year's figures and the projections of the County of Grafschaft Bentheim. Approximately 300 children under the age of 3 are currently on waiting lists for a daycare spot in Nordhorn.
The increase in registration numbers can be attributed to the planned parent contribution exemption on the state level for the first and second kindergarten year, as well as the reduction of fees for both kindergarten and daycare spots in Nordhorn as of January 1st. Councilwoman Marlies Schomakers highlighted these factors as the main reasons for the rise in demand.
In an effort to address the growing demand, the city council of Nordhorn has given the green light to build a new large facility with three daycare groups and two regular groups in the Deegfeld area. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2019.
The administration is also working intensively to identify further locations and expansion possibilities for daycare spots. Over the past five years, the city of Nordhorn has invested heavily in the expansion of child daycare for children under 3 years old, doubling the number of daycare spots from around 180 to around 360.
However, the city still faces a shortage of skilled workers, which is becoming apparent in the facilities in Nordhorn, posing a significant challenge for the expansion of care offerings. Despite this, the city remains committed to providing quality care for its youngest residents.
As the demand for childcare spaces continues to grow, Nordhorn is setting an example for other cities in the region, demonstrating the importance of investing in early childhood care and education. The city's efforts are reflected in its surpassing of the nationwide average target for care spots for children between 1 and 3 years old.
