Struggling academic domain characterized by prolonged resilience, according to Stuckrad-Barre
In the literary world of Germany, two authors have recently made headlines - Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre and Caroline Wahl. While von Stuckrad-Barre is known for his works such as "Soloalbum" and "Panikherz", Wahl has gained prominence with her novel "Die Assistentin", which deals with patriarchal power abuse in the publishing industry.
Caroline Wahl, born in 1995, has been making waves in the literary scene with her sharp, ironic tone and depiction of workplace power dynamics. Her book, informed by her own experience as an assistant at Diogenes Verlag in Zurich, was published in 2025 to critical acclaim.
Von Stuckrad-Barre, on the other hand, has a different approach to the literary scene. He finds it boring, uptight, and dominated by bores and meaning-mongers. Instead, he prefers the company of musicians over authors. However, he has recently expressed his admiration for Caroline Wahl's work, calling "Die Assistentin" her best yet.
The praise from von Stuckrad-Barre comes as Wahl's novel faces controversy. An anonymous reader has accused Wahl of trying to get rich by writing about poverty, an accusation Wahl firmly rejects. She has noted the backlash coming as "Die Assistentin" is about to be released.
Wahl has also criticised a "ridiculously embarrassing hate article" based on the anonymous review. She expresses her confidence regarding the release of "Assistentin" and "22 Bahnen" on Instagram, despite the controversy.
Meanwhile, Wahl's anti-boring attitude has resonated with von Stuckrad-Barre, who finds it more akin to hip-hop. He does not associate much with other authors, describing them as loners and oddballs on the fringes.
The film adaptation of Caroline Wahl's book "22 Bahnen" is also praised by von Stuckrad-Barre. The novel, about 22 trains travelling across Germany, is a testament to Wahl's versatility as an author.
As the release of "Die Assistentin" approaches, the controversy surrounding Wahl's work continues. However, her admirers, including von Stuckrad-Barre, remain supportive of her bold and unapologetic approach to storytelling.
