Struggling for acknowledgment: A trans student's life path

On July 15, 2025, a transgender student stepped into San Carlos School of Cebu, marking a significant milestone not just for themselves, but for every trans student yearning for acceptance and respect.

The individual, a trans woman, had faced a challenge with the school's "proper haircut" policy. She expressed her concerns to the principal, Mrs. Marinel Tolentino, explaining that cutting her hair would cause gender dysphoria and impact her mental health.

The principal listened empathically, understanding the gravity of the situation. No new medical proof was required before the discussion, as previously thought. The individual's Tito, who works under DepEd, had scheduled a meeting to discuss the matter.

The OSFA officer, however, responded harshly, questioning why the student had enrolled if they knew about the policy. Despite this, the principal remained supportive, telling the student she could keep her long hair, provided she wore the female uniform.

The individual's adviser had initially raised concerns about the hair issue, but the father asked the student to focus on their studies, eventually supporting the decision. The mother, meanwhile, suggested transferring schools, but the student confided in her that they didn't want to leave their friends and community behind.

The decision was seen as a victory, as the student's identity was finally being respected. The student felt relieved and overjoyed, no longer having to worry about transferring or cutting their hair.

This story serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in creating an inclusive environment for all students. It's a step forward in the journey towards acceptance and respect for trans students in schools across the Philippines.
