Study That Transformed Me into an Academician... More or Less

Dylan Blau Edelstein, a Humanities Correspondent, embarked on an academic journey during his time at the University of Florida that would eventually lead him to question whether he could be considered a researcher.

It all began with a freshman writing seminar paper. Dylan chose to research the portrayal of a gay couple in the Broadway musical "La Cage Aux Folles." His ambition led him to go out of his way to learn more than he might otherwise have, delving into the original 1983 production and the 2004 revival at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

Through this project, Dylan found academic value in his niche interests. He realised that research can be enjoyable when it is personally meaningful. This revelation was a starting point in his journey to becoming a researcher.

Dylan believes that this project was more than just an academic exercise. It was a stepping stone, a demonstration that papers can become enjoyable when they are deeply rooted in personal interests. The project showed him that research is not about changing the world, but about using personal interests to ask meaningful questions.

However, Dylan questions whether his work makes him a "researcher." He admits that research can be incredibly stressful, but he finds it worth it when it comes from a personal place. The project on "La Cage Aux Folles" led him to this realisation: research is not about grandiose discoveries, but about using personal interests to explore and understand the world in a deeper way.

In the end, Dylan found academic value in his niche interests through this project. He believes that this project was a starting point in his journey to becoming a researcher. And while he may question his status as a "researcher," there's no denying that his work is a testament to the power of personal passion in academic pursuits.
