Bottrop, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has once again joined forces with its neighbouring cities for the fourth time this year, participating in the intermunicipal community project known as ÖKOPROFIT. This project, aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises, is designed to reduce resource consumption, lower costs, increase profit margins, and promote more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

Two schools, Heinrich-Heine-Gymnasium and Willy-Brandt-Gesamtschule, are representing Bottrop in the current round of ÖKOPROFIT. The project was launched on February 28 in the plenary hall of the Science Park in Gelsenkirchen.

The ÖKOPROFIT project, an ecological initiative funded by the Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, and Transport of the state of NRW, offers the opportunity for participants to critically examine their own structures and work processes, identifying areas that can be optimized for a more sustainable future.

Last year, over 40 measures were developed and implemented in ÖKOPROFIT, resulting in savings of more than 250,000 euros, a reduction in energy consumption of 850,000 kilowatt-hours, and savings of 1,169 tons of CO2. Additionally, approximately 110 tons of waste and 3,450 cubic meters of water per year were saved.

The results of previous ÖKOPROFIT projects demonstrate that economy and ecology can be harmoniously combined in a sustainable manner. This example is desirable for more businesses to engage in, for their own benefit and for the benefit of the region.

B.A.U.M. Consult, Hamm, is accompanying the ÖKOPROFIT project. For further information about ÖKOPROFIT, visit the ÖKOPROFIT Network NRW website or refer to the brochure "ÖKOPROFIT Bottrop - Gelsenkirchen - Gladbeck - Herne".

Rainer Jesenek (Environment and Green Department) and Frank Paluch (Economic Development and Location Management) can provide further information about ÖKOPROFIT. Klaus Müller, Technical Deputy Mayor, is pleased that the project is starting, as the participants will show what contribution can be made to the implementation of global sustainability goals and climate protection goals.

Representing the mayors of all four cities, Gelsenkirchen's Mayor Karin Welge gave the starting signal for the current round. A total of 13 participants will develop their own measures within the framework of eight network meetings in the current round of ÖKOPROFIT. The project is intended to continue as a project under the sponsorship of the four cities in the future.

The example set by ÖKOPROFIT businesses is inspiring, and it is hoped that more businesses will follow suit, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for all.
