Subscription Plan Based on Perplexity for Publishers
Perplexity Launches Comet Plus and Makes Offer for Google's Chrome Browser
In a bold move to shake up the browser market, Perplexity has announced the launch of Comet Plus and made an offer of over $34.5 billion to Alphabet, Google's parent company, to acquire its Chrome browser.
The new subscription service, Comet Plus, is now available for $5 per month or included in Pro and Max plans of Perplexity. It aims to move away from the "primitive economy of clicks and page views" that has been a source of dissatisfaction for users.
Users of Comet Plus will have direct access to participating publishers' websites and premium content from a group of trusted publishers and journalists. The offer includes well-known names such as TIME, Der Spiegel, Fortune, and RTL Deutschland, although Perplexity has not yet officially named the publishing partners for Comet Plus. The company plans to reveal its partners once the Comet browser is generally available.
The Comet browser, launched by Perplexity in July, is positioned as a solution to the issues faced by publishers in the current web model. Publishers have been struggling to maintain trust with their readers due to the web model based on clicks and page views. The Comet browser aims to improve the web for all users and restore the trust of readers in publishers.
AI assistants in the Comet browser can be tasked with completing tasks on publishers' websites, providing direct answers based on the highest quality content on the internet. This feature is designed to improve the user experience and reduce the frustration of endless blue links leading to human nonsense and no answers.
The acquisition of Chrome could potentially give Perplexity control over a significant portion of the web browsing market. However, the offer has not yet been accepted by Google.
According to Bloomberg, Comet Plus has a budget of $42.5 million. Perplexity plans to retain 20% of the revenue from Comet Plus, distributing 80% to the publishers.
The Comet browser and Comet Plus are part of Perplexity's strategy to move away from the "primitive economy of clicks and page views" and create a more user-friendly and trustworthy web experience for all.
