Subsidized vehicle production by the government: Volkwagen's most affordable electric car is now being manufactured in Portugal
Volkswagen to Produce Affordable Electric Car ID.1 in Portugal
Volkswagen (VW) has announced that its most affordable electric car, the ID.1, will be produced at the VW plant in Palmela, Portugal. The decision to produce the ID.1 in Portugal was made by the Volkswagen Group, and production is scheduled to start in 2027.
The VW plant in Palmela, which is located 40 kilometers south of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is one of the most efficient in the automotive industry. The Portuguese state will provide a subsidy of 30 million euros for the ID.1 project, which is expected to cost a multi-million-euro sum due to the conversion of production to electric vehicles.
Thomas Hegel Gunther, VW Portugal CEO, signed a letter of intent for the production of the ID.1 in Portugal. The ID.1 will be available on the market for 20,000 euros from 2027. However, the exact number of parts for the ID.1 coming directly from VW or purchased externally is unclear.
Volkswagen produces key components of the ID.1 such as its own battery composition, electric motor, and rear axle. Some structural parts like the scuttle (section between pedals and front wheels) and front wing (which includes the charging point) share design elements with other models on the MEB-Entry platform, implying potential external or shared sourcing for those parts.
The conversion of production to electric vehicles must be completed by the end of 2027. Some details about the batteries for the ID.1 are still unknown. Part of VW's cost-cutting measures includes the elimination of around 35,000 jobs in Germany.
Portugal's Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida, described the VW ID.1 project as an "extremely important investment in the Portuguese industry." VW aims to save up to 15 billion euros by the end of the year. The ID.1 will be produced alongside combustion engine vehicles.
The production of the ID.1 in Germany would have increased its price, making Portugal a more cost-effective location for the production of the affordable electric car. The ID.1 will undoubtedly be a significant addition to the electric vehicle market, offering an affordable option for consumers seeking a sustainable mode of transport.
