Substantial Amount Over £10 Million Allocated to safeguard Essential Transport Infrastructures across Greater Manchester
UK Government Announces Additional Funding for Greater Manchester's Transport Network
The UK Government has announced an extraordinary settlement of funding for Greater Manchester's local transport network, as part of its ongoing support for the region during the pandemic.
The funding, totalling over £1.07 billion, includes £18 million specifically earmarked for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to help the city's transport network recover from the pandemic's impact. This announcement follows a series of financial support measures provided by the government since March 2020, amounting to more than £400 million.
Mark Harper, the Transport Secretary, stated, "We have repeatedly supported Greater Manchester and the Bee Network during the pandemic, and today's announcement is another step in our commitment to the region."
The funding is contingent on TfGM's unique local funding commitment to the Greater Manchester Transport Fund (GMTF) and is aimed at operating the transport network while considering value for money for all taxpayers. The money will protect and improve services in Greater Manchester's local transport network, ensuring it continues to serve the community effectively.
TfGM is also required to outline a pathway to financial sustainability, demonstrating its commitment to long-term planning and ensuring the continued success of the region's transport network.
The funding includes £39.7 million for active travel schemes and £19.87 million through Levelling Up Funds for transport. In addition, the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS) contribute £1.07 billion to the overall funding.
The Trailblazer Devolution Deal, which strengthened the Mayor's powers on transport in Greater Manchester, has played a significant role in the circumstances TfGM currently faces. The deal has enabled the region to take control of its own transport future, making decisions that best suit the needs of the community.
The Transport Secretary expressed confidence that the additional funding will help operators recover from the pandemic and emphasized that the funding must be fair to taxpayers. He also highlighted that the funding is not only the £18 million previously mentioned but includes a variety of financial support measures.
This latest funding announcement is not the first time Greater Manchester's transport network has received support during the pandemic. The UK Government has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the region, ensuring that the transport network can continue to thrive despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
The funding will last until the end of March 2024, providing a much-needed boost to Greater Manchester's transport network as it works towards recovery and resilience.
