Substantial water damage at Berliner Ensemble to necessitate minimum expenditure of one million euros for repairs

The Berliner Ensemble, a renowned German theatre, faced an unexpected disaster last Friday when its main stage was flooded due to an accidental activation of an emergency sprinkler system during the intermission of the play Ivanov.

According to reports by rbb, approximately 15,000 litres of water caused extensive damage, leaving many devices, including lighting and sound equipment, beyond repair. The incident took place on Friday, and the theatre has been undergoing repairs ever since.

Preliminary estimates suggest that the cost of the flood damage will exceed one million euros. The repair costs for the historically significant theatre, based on preservation regulations, are estimated to amount to around 52,500 euros for tasks like restoring stucco ceilings, wall drying and renovation, and repair of historic windows, as well as planning and expert fees. Without special insurance, the owners would have to cover over 40,000 euros themselves.

Further financial losses are anticipated due to cancelled performances, with the current schedule of performances being adjusted. Anyone with tickets for an upcoming show will be contacted by post.

The managing director of Berliner Ensemble, Oliver Resse, expressed his relief that no one was harmed in the incident. However, he also highlighted the potential for further deterioration if the damage is not promptly addressed and reported to insurance, potentially escalating restoration costs.

A more precise estimate of the damage will be possible after further analyses. The premiere of Sibylle Berg's RCE, which was scheduled for April 25th, may not take place as planned due to the ongoing repairs.

The news about the water damage at the Berliner Ensemble was reported by rbb. The theatre expects repairs to cost at least one million euros. Despite the setbacks, the Berliner Ensemble remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality theatre to its audience.
