In a heartbreaking incident, a boat accident has claimed the lives of three sisters while they were attempting to cross from Libya to Italy. The sisters, aged 9, 11, and 17, had escaped the war-torn country of Sudan, seeking a better life but lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea.

The boat, overcrowded and partially deflated, had been taking on water for hours during the crossing. It was crossing the sea on a night with 1.5 meter (4.9 feet) waves, making the rescue operation extremely dangerous.

Migrants frequently take perilous journeys on unseaworthy, crowded boats in an attempt to reach Europe, often coming from other parts of Africa where they have faced difficult conditions such as conflict or violence.

The tragic incident occurred as the refugees were hoping to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa. Unfortunately, their journey ended in tragedy, with the boat capsizing and the sisters losing their lives.

The mother and brother of the three sisters were among those rescued. However, the rescue operation was not without its own risks, given the challenging weather conditions.

Volunteers from the organisation RESQSHIP found the bodies of the three sisters. Their deaths serve as a grim reminder of the dangers migrants face while trying to reach Europe.

The International Organization for Migration estimates that at least 30,000 people have died while trying to reach Italy from North Africa since 2014. This shocking statistic underscores the urgent need for safer migration routes and more humane treatment of refugees.

The funding of the Libyan Coast Guard, which is partially responsible for rescue operations, is partially provided by Italy and the European Union. This support is controversial due to reported violent actions by the Libyan Coast Guard. The United Nations has accused the Libyan Coast Guard of complicity in human trafficking, torture, and enslavement.

As the world grapples with this tragedy, it is crucial to remember the human lives lost and to work towards creating safer, more humane migration routes for those seeking a better life.
